Backpacking

Backpacking is a mode of travel that inspires liberation, freedom and self sufficiency. It can be travelling to new countries, cities or into mountain environments. The concept of backpacking really means that you will be able to carry those items you consider essential in one large rucksack on your back, thereby giving you the freedom and flexibility to go anywhere you choose, any time you like.

The magnitude and style of trip you have planned will almost certainly define the kind of large backpack you require. You may be going hiking, trekking or on your D of E expedition (Duke of Edinburgh). Mostly they are 55 to 70 litres. Much above this and the backpack will be too heavy to carry. They can be gender specific, although not essential (this is personal and always about the fit). It is as ever, a case of looking in detail at the pack and deciding what features you really would like yours to have.
